A Journey Through Time: The Most Fascinating Historical Reenactments of Central Italy

Let's close our eyes and imagine a different kind of summer, where the present fades away to make way for ancient legends and centuries-old traditions. A marvellous journey through time awaits us, a staged route punctuated by the beat of drums and the magnetic charm of Central Italy's most spectacular historical re-enactments.

We'll stop off in Lazio, Abruzzo, Umbria and Tuscany, visiting eight places far removed from mass tourism. We'll step back into bygone eras where ladies, knights and ancient crafts will once again bring to life villages frozen in time. Amidst breathtaking views, castles shrouded in mystery and centuries-old traditions jealously guarded, we shall discover a secret Italy.

This journey through the most beautiful historical re-enactments in central Italy will be an extraordinarily real adventure, where great history is not read in books, but felt, vibrantly, on your skin.

Let's start the engines and travel back in time. Our summer road trip sets off from Rome, the Eternal City, to explore the most authentic corners of central Italy, following a route that takes in Lazio, Umbria, Abruzzo and Tuscany.

Let's leave the busy motorways behind: this journey through some of central Italy's most evocative historical re-enactments will take us off the beaten track, amidst breathtaking landscapes and treasures just waiting to be discovered.

The atmosphere of proud cities such as Arezzo, Viterbo, L'Aquila, Todi and Fermo alternates with the intimate charm of villages frozen in time, such as Montefiascone, Servigliano and Valfabbrica. 

Awaiting us will be the magic of the Middle Ages: a vibrant and proud world, brought to life by the rustle of the ladies' gowns, the clatter of warhorses' hooves, the blast of horns and the pinpoint accuracy of the archers. Every step will reveal squares redolent of fire and feasts, where memory lives on thanks to communities that jealously guard their roots.

There are many historical re-enactments in Italy. Between August and October, we will experience the following:

- The medieval Procession in Montefiascone

- The Cavalcade of the Assumption in Fermo

- The historical re-enactment of the Chivalric Tournament of San Clementino in Servigliano

- The Perdonanza Celestiniana in L’Aquila

- The historical re-enactment of the Palio di Valfabbrica

- The Procession of the Macchina di Santa Rosa in Viterbo

- The Giostra del Saracino in Arezzo

- The Disfida di San Fortunato in Todi

An epic adventure filled with legends, tournaments and ancient traditions awaits us just around the corner!

We get into our car and, leaving Rome behind, head towards Montefiascone Hill, a natural terrace overlooking the splendid Tuscia region. Here we will take part in the Wine Fair, which comes alive with magic thanks to the re-enactment of the famous medieval historical Procession. This annual event, held in August, enjoys great renown and is the most eagerly awaited of the year.

The atmosphere becomes magical as we recall the history of the distant year 1111. In that year, the servant Martino and his lord, Bishop Defuk, arrived together with Henry V. There they encountered a fate linked to the legendary wine "EST! EST!! EST!!!', which cost the Bishop his life because he drank too much of it.

On the first Sunday in August, the streets of the historic centre come alive with an evocative double procession. The Civil and Military Processions captivate the public, both in the morning and in the evening.

Two hundred participants in authentic period costumes are divided by social class. In this way, they bring ladies, princes, consuls, innkeepers and archers back to life.

Amidst flag-waving displays, medieval dances and glasses of "EST! EST!! EST!!!", one of Lazio's finest wines, the week reaches its climax on Friday. On this day, the grape-stomping contest and the barrel race get underway.

The event finally draws to a close on Sunday evening with a moving re-enactment of Defuk's death.

This extraordinary historical re-enactment will transport us to the heart of the medieval era, amongst the nobles of the Montefiascone region and the most fascinating figures of the past. Let's choose our medieval alter ego and let ourselves be swept away by the magic!

Our journey through the most beautiful historical re-enactments in central Italy continues, taking us to Fermo, in the Marche region.

Imagine stepping back in time to the year 1182. In Fermo, the Middle Ages come to life every year on 14 and 15 August with the Cavalcata dell'Assunta, Italy's oldest historical re-enactment.

Amidst the ancient walls and breathtaking views, the city is filled with pure magic. Over a thousand participants in splendid period costumes parade by torchlight in the evocative Corteo in Notturna on 14 August, culminating in the blessing of the Palio. On 15 August, the Corsa del Palio takes place: a thrilling horse race in which the 10 districts compete for glory.

During the festival, Fermo is transformed: medieval taverns open their doors, whilst the narrow streets resound with drums, flag-wavers and historical re-enactments. Visiting Fermo at this time means enjoying a unique experience, an authentic and fascinating journey back in time.

Finally, the countryside surrounding Fermo also holds hidden gems and picturesque views, all waiting to be discovered!

We drive a few kilometres through the Marca Fermana, the stunning area surrounding Fermo, and reach our third stop: the picturesque village of Servigliano.

The Marca Fermana is a region just waiting to be discovered, with many hidden gems, ancient villages and splendid views over the green hills of the Marche.

It is 16 August, and we are here to relive the San Clementino Knights' Tournament, a truly magical journey back in time.

As we stroll through the village of Servigliano, we find ourselves transported back to 1450, the year in which the Abbot of Farfa ceded the splendid Piana di San Gualtiero to the Community of Servigliano, bringing an end to two centuries of bitter conflict.

To celebrate the peace, legendary games were created which, since 1969, have been revived every summer. It is much more than just an event: it is a truly thrilling journey through local history and traditions.

Here's what lies in store for us on this incredible adventure:

- The Grand Renaissance Procession: Over 300 participants in sumptuous period costumes will parade through the streets, accompanied by rousing music, traditional dances and performers who will bring the festive atmosphere to life.

-  The Challenge of the Five Districts: The ancient town comes alive with rivalry and passion. Porta Navarra, Porta Marina, San Marco, Paese Vecchio and Porta Santo Spirito are ready to do battle.

-  The Giostra dell'Anello (16 August): The highlight of the festival. The majestic historical Procession will lead the crowd from the town centre to the tournament ground, where the knights will compete in an adrenaline-fuelled joust to win the coveted Palio.

It will be 10 days of magic. The whole town is transformed for over a week, with the spectacular Gara di Alfieri e Musici, traditional games and the characteristic local taverns, tucked away in the most picturesque corners of the historic centre, where you can rediscover the flavours and folklore of days gone by.

It's time to get back in the car and leave the Marche!

Our fourth stop on this tour of historical re-enactments in central Italy takes us to L'Aquila in Abruzzo, where the peaks of the Gran Sasso almost touch the sky!

It is the last week of August, and we are about to take part in the historical re-enactment of a thousand-year-old ritual of great spiritual significance: the Celestine Pardon.

It all began in 1294, when the hermit Pietro dal Morrone, having just been elected Pope Celestine V, bestowed the Bull of Pardon upon the world, establishing the first Jubilee in history. Since then, L'Aquila has safeguarded this treasure of spiritual reconciliation, now recognised as part of the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The historical re-enactment transforms the city into an open-air theatre. The highlight is the evocative Historical Procession, in which hundreds of participants in splendid period costumes escort the Bull to the Basilica of Santa Maria di Collemaggio.

Here, the most solemn act takes place: the opening of the Holy Door, which marks the beginning of a day of absolute peace and universal indulgence.

The Perdonanza is a profound inner journey, a universal call to brotherhood and rebirth. Taking part in this event means immersing oneself in a river of light and history, where the past embraces the present and the beat of the drums ignites the spirit.

28 August: Opening ceremony of the Holy Door, preceded by the traditional Historical Procession.

We're changing regions once again and heading to Umbria, in the province of Perugia, to stop off at the picturesque village of Valfabbrica.

Between late August and early September, time stands still in Valfabbrica, restoring Umbria to its noble medieval heart. The Palio di Valfabbrica re-enacts ancient traditions and the castle's historic submission to the powerful city of Perugia in the 13th century, transforming every alleyway into a vibrant, living stage.

Within the ancient walls of the village, there is a deeply captivating and special atmosphere: illuminated by the warm, flickering light of torches, skilled actors, musicians and flag-wavers bring the past to life with passion. Historical scenes faithfully depict slices of everyday life in the Middle Ages, enveloping visitors in a truly unique, magical and unforgettable sensory journey.

The highlight of the historical re-enactment is the Giostra d'Italia, one of the most thrilling and technically demanding equestrian contests on the entire peninsula. In this spectacular competition, riders from the historic districts compete at the Campo de li Giochi ( Field of Games) in trials of exceptional skill.

Between the speed of the ring race, the collision with the Saracen and the adrenaline rush of direct combat in the cages, the competition blends courage, competitive spirit and pinpoint precision. The roll of drums and passionate cheering accompany every charge, ultimately crowning the winning district.

Event dates: 27 August to 6 September

We set off again and return to Lazio to stop off in Viterbo, the City of the Popes, where we will witness the historical re-enactment of the Procession of the Macchina di Santa Rosa.

Every year, on the evening of 3 September, Viterbo comes to a standstill for this event unique in the world, now recognised as part of the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The Machine of Santa Rosa consist in a majestic illuminated tower, some thirty metres high and weighing fifty quintals. The tower bears the statue of the city's patron saint at its summit and parades through the night, illuminated by countless small flames.

Supporting this marvel of ingenuity and faith are over a hundred men: the Facchini di Santa Rosa. 

Dressed in white and red, before setting out on the gruelling journey along a difficult route of over one kilometre through the historic centre, they receive a solemn blessing from the Bishop, bearing witness to the very real danger of a feat that pushes the limits of what is possible.

The event takes place in two parts. On the afternoon of 2 September, the historical Procession takes place, featuring over 300 participants and the relic of the Saint's heart.

The Procession is an explosion of evocative imagery and profound emotion, a supreme test of strength and absolute devotion to Rosa, the 'Child Saint' and patron Saint of the city, who died at just 18 in 1251.

A centuries-old tradition that has always enchanted distinguished international figures, but above all one that brings together locals and visitors from all corners of the globe, captivated by the beauty of a miracle that is renewed year after year.

Visit the Palace of the Popes

For the sixth stop on our journey through central Italy's most captivating historical re-enactments, we head to Arezzo, one of the leading art cities of eastern Tuscany.

The heart of Arezzo beats to the rhythm of drums every September, when Piazza Grande is transformed into the stage for the Giostra del Saracino. This extraordinary re-enactment has its roots in the Middle Ages, having originated as an ancient military exercise to train Christian knights against the threat of Muslim bandits, the 'Saracens'.

Today, the event evokes a festive atmosphere. The fluttering of the colourful banners of the four historic districts ignites the square's passion, packed with spectators. The climax comes when the jousters gallop towards the 'Buratto': an armoured automaton representing the King of the Indies.

The knights must strike its target board to score points, whilst deftly dodging the puppet's heavy flail, which lashes out suddenly to strike them from behind. It is a timeless duel of courage, precision and adrenaline.

Witnessing this spectacle means embarking on an unforgettable journey into the excitement of the Middle Ages, where history and beauty merge to create a unique experience; at the same time, attending the Giostra del Saracino is an excellent opportunity to discover the countless cultural attractions of the splendid city of Arezzo.

We get back in the car for the final leg of our journey: Todi.

Every year, as autumn's colours take hold, Todi takes a veritable leap back in time, shedding its modern guise to reclaim its glorious 14th-century spirit. October thus becomes the setting for the 'Disfida di San Fortunato', a historical re-enactment created to celebrate the town's patron saint and to bring the ancient splendour of the free communes back to life.

The atmosphere in the stone-paved alleyways is mesmerising: the scent of spices and medieval taverns mingles with the hypnotic roll of drums and the rustle of velvet brushing against the cobblestones. Piazza del Popolo is transformed into an open-air theatre where nobles, ladies and artisans enchant visitors with a feast of colours and sounds from a bygone era.

The beating heart of the event is the famous historical archery competition: the air is thick with adrenaline as Italy's finest archers, focused and proud, draw their historical bows to compete for victory. Amidst the flight of arrows and the fluttering of flags, Todi offers us an immersive and thrilling experience. In this unforgettable journey, history becomes magic.
