Castelsaraceno manages to surprise you even before you reach the heart of the village.
The surrounding trails lead through unspoiled nature, across hidden gorges and open spaces, where you can see birds of prey gliding between peaks and cliffs, and the rare, ancient Loric Pines, a symbol of the territory reflecting its truest identity. In the Pollino area stands Europe’s oldest tree, a Loric Pine, silent witness to centuries of natural history.
Not far from the town, you can venture along routes immersed in the greenery of the Pollino National Park (to the south, toward the border with Calabria) and the Appennino Lucano Val d’Agri Lagonegrese National Park (to the north, near Campania). Here you can take on true outdoor adventures along high-altitude trails that rise above 2,000 meters.
You can also follow a section of the Sentiero Italia, one of the most fascinating long-distance hiking routes in the entire peninsula. This trail runs along the Apennine backbone, connecting villages and different cultural landscapes. The stage linking Castelsaraceno to Latronico stretches for about 15 km through meadows, beech forests, and natural springs, offering magnificent panoramic viewpoints over wild and striking scenery.

And if you want to rejuvenate and enjoy wellness experiences right in the heart of the village, Castelsaraceno has plenty to offer. Here, balance isn’t just about natural landscapes: it also comes from the authentic daily life you can discover while strolling through the village’s quiet streets. This isn’t a “tourist set-up,” but the reflection of a community that preserves knowledge, customs, and memories tied to pastoral and rural life.
A key reference point to understand this identity is the Museum of Pastoralism, a space dedicated to the history of transhumance and the traditional activities that shaped local culture. The experience offered by the museum unfolds across four thematic areas, each developed in its own exhibition room: the Hall of Time, the Hall of Space, the Hall of Knowledge, and the Hall of Memory of Hall of Memory of the Castellana Pastoral Culture.
The museum is not only a place of preservation but also of contemporary interpretation: from here comes a renewed focus on the ancient pastoral routes, understood as historical traces that reflect how the village has interacted with its surrounding landscape over time.
Traditional events in Castelsaraceno: Festa della ‘Ndenna
The village of Castelsaraceno preserves local festivals and traditions that have endured for centuries, still telling the enchanting story of the town today. Among these, the Festa della ‘Ndenna stands out, celebrated on the first three Sundays of June in honor of the patron saint, Saint Anthony of Padua, and linked to an ancient tree ritual that combines devotion, culture, and the local territory.
The “tree marriage” features two trees as protagonists: the ‘Ndenna, the tallest and most majestic beech in the forest, symbolizing the groom, and the Cunocchia, a young pine representing the bride. Originally a ritual to welcome summer and ensure the fertility of the fields, today it celebrates social cohesion and respect for nature.
The festival unfolds in three main stages: on the first Sunday, the villagers select and transport the ‘Ndenna from Bosco Favino to the town square; the second Sunday is dedicated to the Cunocchia, carried on the shoulders of young villagers and carefully handled to arrive intact. The journey of the trees is an integral part of the event, accompanied by the entire community with songs and applause.
On the third Sunday, at dawn, the two trees are united using ropes and wooden supports, followed by a procession and a collective celebration. The ‘Ndenna and Cunocchia remain standing in the center of the square until October, symbolizing the continuity between past and present and embodying the roots and identity of Castelsaraceno.
