Day 1, morning: arrival in Torre San Patrizio at a hilltop farm stay

It’s early in the morning, the air is fresh and the sun is shining brighter and brighter. At this time of the day driving is a pleasure, especially when driving along silent and colorful roads across the countryside in Le Marche. We feel so happy, because our 2-day stay in Torre San Patrizio is about to begin – and we’re reaching our accommodation right now!

We chose to book a room at a farm stay (agriturismo), the most beautiful option if you want to spend a holiday in this region. The estate, welcoming and refined, is located just a few kilometers away from the town and is pleasantly framed by a beautiful rural landscape consisting of rolling hills and fields.

The view is so beautiful: the historic walls and the bell tower of the village stands out to our sight, as the panorama extends from the Adriatic Sea to the east, to the Sibillini Mountains to the west. It’s such a charming landscape, that it’s no surprise it inspired an English writer to draft a beautiful memoir book capturing the magic of these places.

To refresh ourselves after the car trip, and before setting off to explore the village and its key highlights, we spend a couple of hours by the pool, sunbathing, taking a dip and just unwinding to the sounds of nature.

If you'd like, this is a good moment to ask the farm stay’s staff about interesting things to see and do near Torre San Patrizio. Lunch time is approaching, and now we’re going right to the centre of the town.

Day 1, afternoon: from the historic centre of Torre San Patrizio to Villa Zara

One of the most fascinating things about little towns in Italy, including Torre San Patrizio, is how easy it is to meet the people who work to make these places special. This is what happened to us on our journey!

Having a quick lunch at a bar, we had the pleasure of meeting the president of local Pro Loco, the organization that coordinates and promotes traditional events. He happily introduced us to the signature event of Torre San Patrizio, which is the St. Patrick’s Day celebration in March, and offered us a taste of the iconic green craft beer, a product designed specifically to pay homage to the bond with Ireland and the twinning with the town of Kells. And did you know that here people play a bar game called boccette, which is similar to pool? We gave it a try, it was so fun!

It’s the early afternoon, and as we walk through the historic centre of Torre San Patrizio we get welcomed warmly by the mayor himself, our guide to the alleys and the wonders of the medieval old town. As we visit the town hall, and in particular the beautiful old-fashioned chamber of council and the ancient cisterns for collecting grain, we learn about the old origins of the village and its evolution through the ages. That’s incredible to realize that we're walking in the footsteps of thousands, maybe millions of people throughout more than two millennia, but this is the hidden historical magic you can find in places like the province of Fermo!

It’s time to get ready for the picnic we planned for today. But first, we need to step into a traditional grocery store to buy something good to eat. It comes natural to talk with the shop’s owner, and following her advice we go for some sandwiches with prosciutto Faleria, another traditional and delicious local product. So, let’s get to San Venanzo, a hill south of the historic town you can get to by car or by bicycle, and visit the beautiful and quiet park of Villa Zara.

This place was once the home of Margaret Collier, an English writer who moved to Torre San Patrizio in 1873 and lived here for more than two decades. An unusual life experience for a Victorian lady, which fortunately inspired her to write the memoir book Our Home by the Adriatic, today still considered a precious testimony to the history of Le Marche. We’re not surprised to see the mayor sitting on a bench in the park, reading a few pages of the book: Margaret had the sensitivity to put into words the emotions she felt by visiting and living these places, and if we are still so captivated by Torre San Patrizio today, much of the credit goes to her.

The afternoon goes by, as we enjoy our picnic sitting on the grass and surrounded by the beautiful greenery around. These moments are the best if you seek informal and relaxed talks with locals: here we met some nice old men playing briscola, the most popular Italian card game, and watching them playing was entertaining! But the sun seems to be setting soon, it’s time to get back to our agriturismo for a special dinner.

Day 1, evening: typical Marche’s dinner at the farm stay and night views

Tonight, to wrap up a lovely Day 1, we decide to indulge ourselves with a delicious dinner featuring Le Marche’s typical products and recipes. The agriturismo restaurant offers both inside and outside tables, and since the weather is fine we opt for dining outdoors. Great food, cozy hospitality and awesome views of the night sky over the hills, simply a perfect combination!

This dinner covers the very best of the food and wine heritage of the southern Marche region, including first courses like tagliatelle al tartufo (truffle tagliatelle), fritto misto marchigiano (olive all’ascolana, fried lamb and vegetables, and fried custard cubes or cremini), and wines like the red Rosso Piceno and the white Verdicchio.

If you want to try a specific kind of pasta produced only in Le Marche, you should ask for a course based on maccheroncini di Campofilone. Autumn is also a great time to try recipes based on fresh mushrooms, from tagliatelle to roasted porcini and delicious sides for second courses based on meat.

This dinner truly satisfies us, warming our hearts and setting us up for a well-deserved night's sleep. If the first day of our trip to Torre San Patrizio focused mainly on local history and food, on Day 2 we’re going to share experiences that will surely connect us to this land, to its traditions and to its people.

Day 2, morning: slow waking up and yoga practice in the nature

Waking up on the second day is slow and natural, without any alarm set. The gentle touch of the sunlight through the window, and the delicate chirp of birds outside, makes for a peaceful wake-up call to wish a lovely good morning in this beautiful countryside retreat!

We head down to breakfast in the agriturismo’s dining room, which offers a wide spread, catering to both a traditional sweet Italian breakfast and an international mixed option. This morning we want to dedicate time to practicing wellness exercises right in the lush greenery that surrounds the property, finding a synergy with nature.

What better way to do that than practicing yoga outdoors? It only requires a large towel to place on the grass, comfortable sportswear and, above all, a clear mind – but, honestly, the vibes of Torre San Patrizio make finding inner peace effortless!

Yoga is a powerful and beneficial practice for your body and soul, especially if there’s such a beautiful hilly sunny landscape around you, but it shouldn't be rushed. So let’s not hurry: after all, we’re here in Le Marche to slow down!

Once we’re done with yoga, before returning to the room for a shower, the staff of the farm stay invites us to meet the farm’s hens, that produce delicious eggs sustainably. It feels like a truly simple, yet symbolic moment, another reminder of the idyllic bond that connects Torre San Patrizio to its rural heritage.

Day 2, afternoon: the agricultural and artisan world of Torre San Patrizio

Since we’ll be spending the whole afternoon out of the historic centre of Torre San Patrizio, before leaving the farm stay we decide to pick up some packed lunch to take away – but it’s going to be delicious! We’re bringing buns filled with porchetta, a typical product here in Le Marche made from roasted and spiced pork, usually cut in thin slices like ham to prepare panino con la porchetta (porchetta sandwich). They taste so good!

This afternoon we’re exploring the agricultural and artisan world of Torre San Patrizio, the two pillars of the local economy that have thrived for centuries, from the Middle Age to the present day. We have two stops to visit: a sustainable agricultural company and a shoe and footwear artisan workshop.

The owner of the agricultural company, a cheerful lady who has been living here all her life, welcomes us with a warm and kind smile. The hospitality is so nice that it truly feels like visiting family! And, no surprise, we quickly get acquainted with her and the beautiful countryside she’s cultivating near the village.

Walking through the paths between the fields, under a warm but gentle sun, she told us about her activity and how legumes, grains, olives and fruits are cultivated sustainably and according to traditional methods, to be sold fresh to consumers or to be processed into products like pasta, biscuits and crackers, fruit preserves, canned legumes and oil.

Our visit also included a few nice and practical moments, like the harvest of wild peas and the preparation of simple recipes based on local produce. It was such a fun, hands-on experience, though a bit tiring: don’t worry, if you need some little rest afterward, you can take a nap on the hammocks in the shadow of the trees!

We say a fond goodbye and head into the late afternoon toward an artisan shoe workshop. The area of Torre San Patrizio is indeed famous for its footwear craftsmanship, an activity which for over a century has been making this side of Le Marche a prominent hub for high-quality footwear, crafted entirely in Italy from start to finish.

On this visit we had a chance to talk with the manufacturers that operate in the workshop, learning about the artisan work behind the making of every single shoe and the secrets of their quality, from the selection of leather to the accuracy of each step of the supply chain.

This particular workshop specializes mainly in casual and sporting footwear, including elegant soccer shoes that convey the Italian style even in sports – but near Torre San Patrizio you can find more footwear workshops to satisfy all your needs!

Day 2, evening: the churches and a cozy dinner with the local ladies

The sun is slowly descending and the sunset hour is approaching, so it’s time to head back to the centre of Torre San Patrizio for an evening stroll, in which we’ll focus especially on visiting the picturesque churches of the village. We have two churches to visit on our itinerary, both located in the middle of the old town, let’s go!

The first stop we’re stepping in is the little, charming Church of Madonna delle Rose, an intimate sacred place dating back to the 15th century which still retains its original aesthetic. Inside, our eyes are immediately drawn to the striking fresco picturing the Madonna col Bambino, historically attributed to Pierpalma da Fermo and dated 1466.

Next is is the Parish Church of Santissimo Salvatore, that stands right in the heart of Torre San Patrizio and dominates the old town’s landscape with its bell tower. The original structure is older, but the current aesthetic dates back to the 18th century. Inside we have found a few fascinating paintings, and an atmosphere which rivals even the main churches of major cities. You shouldn’t miss it!

These are the last hours we’re spending in Le Marche on this magical trip, so we decide to just walk through the historic centre and find a nice spot to sit, enjoy some good food, the views and the vibes of this beautiful place. Little did we know, we were about to experience something completely unexpected.

Strolling around the stone-paved alleys of the old town, and entering a lively square, we suddenly crossed paths with a cheerful group of elderly local ladies (the comari) right when they were setting a dinner table outside. We just wanted to ask them for information, but eventually it happened for real: we became the unexpected guests to a cozy dinner with locals!

This is something you should look for when traveling to Italy: amazing food to have together, a lovely gathering of neighbours, simple yet meaningful conversations, and fun stories to share along with a glass of wine – this is absolutely the way Italians experience conviviality!

Moments like this are truly heartwarming, the perfect icing on the cake for a 2-day escape rich in emotions. It’s time to get back to our room at the agriturismo to spend the last night here, but with the awareness that this trip taught us the authentic dimension of what slow living means. And if you want to experience it firsthand, just come to Le Marche!
