Between September and October, Val di Sole changes pace: summer begins to fade, the trails grow quieter, the woods turn shades of yellow, copper and red, the air becomes crisper, and the sounds of nature come back into focus. Even a seemingly simple day (a walk, a pause by a lake, returning to your own private spa) can leave lasting memories.

This is, then, the perfect time to discover the valley without chasing a “long list of things to see”: autumn invites you to slow down, choose a trail without rushing, stop whenever the landscape calls for it, and leave room for what was never planned. It is a way of travelling especially suited to a romantic getaway, where the journey is, above all, about spending time together.

Why visit Val di Sole in autumn

While summer is perfect for spending entire days on the trails and winter turns the valley into one of the best-known destinations for snow sports, September and October reveal a different side of Val di Sole: quieter, slower and ideal for those who want to enjoy the luxury of having time.

This is when the woods and valleys change colour, chestnuts and apples ripen, and the red deer rutting season begins in Stelvio National Park. Autumn thus becomes the perfect season to discover the valley at a gentler pace, among hikes, seasonal produce and less crowded places.

There is no need for experiences designed specifically for couples: simply choose a trail without rushing to reach the end, stop whenever the view deserves it, listen to the forest and let the day inspire your next stop.

You are not isolated: you are between three valleys

This may be the aspect of Val di Sole that surprises first-time visitors the most: look around and you will see mountains, forests and small villages, yet you are far from isolated. From the Malé area, you can quickly head into Val di Rabbi, continue towards Val di Non and Lake Tovel, or travel further up Val di Sole towards Passo del Tonale. In the opposite direction, Dimaro opens the way to Madonna di Campiglio and the Brenta Dolomites.

There is no need to follow every road in a single trip. In fact, the real privilege of staying for four, five or six days is being able to decide each morning which direction to take. Rather than “collecting places”, you have so many possibilities that there is no need to plan every moment in advance.

What to see and do in Val di Sole in autumn

Among the excursions worth including in a trip to Val di Sole in autumn, Lake Tovel is well worth the detour into nearby Val di Non. Set within the Adamello Brenta Nature Park, it is one of Trentino’s best-known Alpine lakes, and during the autumn months the contrast between the water and the colours of the surrounding woods gives it a completely different atmosphere from summer. Once you reach the lake, you can walk along the shore, choose a quiet spot to stop, or complete the full circuit, which takes around an hour and a half.

Just a few kilometres from Magras di Malé, you can instead enter Val di Rabbi, one of Val di Sole’s side valleys, where a scenic walk leads to the suspension bridge above the Ragaiolo waterfall. More than 100 metres long and suspended up to around 60 metres above the stream, it crosses the forest at an altitude of 1,366 metres and offers an unusual perspective over the valley.

More experienced hikers will also find more technical routes in the area, such as the Sentiero dei Fiori in the Adamello-Presanella area, a historic equipped trail that rises above 3,000 metres. Because of the altitude and the possible presence of ice, it should only be considered after checking current conditions with Alpine guides or local tourist offices.

To stay at lower altitudes, you can follow the Noce River, the natural thread that runs through much of the valley. It is especially well known among rafting enthusiasts, but you do not need to tackle its rapids to enjoy the landscape. The Val di Sole cycle and pedestrian path follows much of its course, while scenic walks pass through woods, meadows and small villages close to the water. From Malé, for example, you can head towards the Ontaneta di Croviana and Carciato, allowing yourself a few hours without a fixed destination: this too can become one of the most enjoyable moments of a romantic getaway in Trentino.

Red deer rut and autumn flavors in Val di Sole

Between September and early October, the rutting calls of red deer echo through the forests of Stelvio National Park during the mating season, a sound to wait for in silence as the light fades and the atmosphere of the woods changes. To experience this without disturbing the animals, guided outings are organised with Park experts, both during the day and, on selected dates, in the evening, with infrared thermal imaging also used for observation.

Finally, autumn in Val di Sole can also be discovered through food and local traditions. As October arrives, chestnuts, apples, cheeses and mountain flavours return to centre stage. If you stay a few days longer, it is worth checking the seasonal events before you leave: a chestnut festival, lunch in a mountain hut or a small village celebration could become one of the most spontaneous memories of the trip.

Where to stay in Val di Sole for a romantic getaway

Choosing where to stay in Val di Sole also means deciding what kind of pace you want for your trip. If you prefer to have services and dining options close at hand, hotels and wellness properties in the valley’s main towns are a practical choice; apartments and residences offer greater independence, especially for longer stays, while farm stays, chalets and smaller properties surrounded by nature are ideal if you are looking for peace and a closer connection with the landscape.

Location matters too: staying in the Malé area, for example, makes it easy to reach Val di Rabbi, head towards Val di Non and Lake Tovel, or travel in the direction of Dimaro, Madonna di Campiglio and the rest of Val di Sole.

For a romantic getaway that combines this freedom with privacy and wellbeing, Nidaris Private Spa Suites in Magras di Malé offers apartments where reclaimed wood, Swiss pine and contemporary design meet a private spa with a Finnish sauna and an emotional shower. Some suites also feature a freestanding bathtub or a Hot Spring® on the terrace. The Love Surprise, with special touches for memorable occasions, adds an extra sense of intimacy to the stay.

Two days or a week? The luxury of having time

On a weekend, you can already get a sense of the valley’s distinctive character: a lake, a walk, an evening in the spa and perhaps the chance to listen to the rutting calls of red deer.

But five or six days give you the freedom to wake up without having to head out straight away, choose a hike only after looking at the sky, spend one day in Val di Rabbi and the next at Lake Tovel, or simply decide that after a long breakfast you do not feel like going anywhere and would rather enjoy a full day of complete relaxation.

For an autumn getaway as a couple, Val di Sole offers the freedom to set a different pace each day, alternating experiences, landscapes and moments to enjoy without rushing.
