The history behind Parco Sigurtà

The land where Parco Sigurtà now stands has a long and fascinating history: as early as 1407, it was referred to as a "brolo cintato", a walled agricultural estate owned by the noble Contarini family. Over the following centuries, the property changed hands among several noble families, expanding over time through dowries and inheritances.

The true transformation into one of Europe's most beautiful botanical gardens began in 1941, when Carlo Sigurtà, a pharmaceutical entrepreneur, purchased the estate. He revived the land—then partly abandoned—by using an ancient irrigation right that brought it back to life.

Today, Parco Sigurtà welcomes visitors with its 18 small lakes, where water lilies, water hyacinths, and lotus flowers grow. Their most stunning blooms can be seen especially in the months of June and July.

The vast green lawns surrounding the lakes are ideal for walking, relaxing, and enjoying the peaceful scenery, where animals such as goats and deer roam freely.

Among other wonders, visitors will discover the little castle (Castelletto), which holds historical memories of the Sigurtà family, a majestic oak tree over 400 years old, a small dog cemetery, a horizontal sundial, and the enchanting Stone of Youth.
