Verona is a lovely and lively city of Veneto, one of the regions of northern Italy, crossed by Adige river, close to the Lake of Garda and not too distant from the Alps, it is a wonderful location to spend a day discovering its beautiful attractions. The majestic Arena and the famous balcony of Juliet's house are the most famous monuments of Verona, but there are other interesting city corners to explore. Our itinerary, which can be done on foot or by bike, touches the main attractions while tasting the delicious food and drink specialties exploring also some corners away from the crowded touristic spots. From Piazza delle Erbe, to the Adige riverside, from a lyric concert to the aperitif ritual, let's start this day journey.

Symbol of the city of Verona, the Arena is a Roman amphitheater built in the 30 AD and used in the past for shows and gladiator fights. Located in Piazza Bra, one of the biggest Verona squares, its shape and size have remained the same during the centuries and still today is the reference point for the cultural life of the city. Nowadays the Arena of Verona with its 12500 seats capacity hosts concerts, events and overall the annual lyric season internationally known and it is usually possible to visit inside this historic monument.

From Piazza Bra walking through the city center it is possible to arrive at Ponte Scaligero (Scaligero bridge), a military fortress built in the XIV century to protect the city: it is a great place to admire the old city and the Adige river from a privileged site. Ponte Scaligero is also a beautiful starting point for a walking or a biking through Adige riverside, exploring the nature skirting the old city. You can arrive until Ponte Pietra (Pietra bridge) one of the ancientest bridge of Verona, with a great view over Colle San Pietro, the hill that from its highness dominates the old city of Verona.

11:30 AM: a visit at Verona’s cathedral

Leaving the riverside and back inside the old city center, you can go to visit Verona’s cathedral officially named Santa Maria Matricolare Cathedral, the most important and stately church of Verona. Built up a paleochristianic basilica destroyed by an earthquake, today’s cathedral - made in Romanesque style in the XII century - has been renovated during the past. The Cathedral of Verona deserves a visit inside its aisles made with Verona red marble, also to admire the Assumption of the Virgin, the masterpiece painting made by Tiziano.

12:30 AM: lunch in a tavern

After a morning day spent riding and walking through the main attractions of Verona, it’s time to taste some traditional plates for lunch. Verona is full of delicious restaurants some of them awarded by the Michelin guide. Our suggestion is to have a lunch in a traditional tavern of the old city, to taste some Verona’s specialities such as the risotto with Amarone, rice cooked with Amarone, a dry red wine originary from Valpolicella a Veneto region close to Verona. 2:00 PM: Juliet’s house and the Scaligere Tombs

In an itinerary of one day in Verona, it cannot missed a visit to the most famous Verona’s balcony: the Juliet’s house, the main character of the most famed love story of the international literature, written by William Shakespeare: Romeo and Juliet. This small house is located in the old city center and it is visited every year by thousands of lovers who swear eternal love under Juliet’s balcony. Close to Juliet’s house there is another unmissable place to visit in a one day tour of Verona: the Scaligere Tombs – Arche Scaligere – a monumental funeral complex of Scaligeri family tombs built in Gothic style during the XIII and the XIV century.

4:00 PM: shopping at Via Mazzini

Leaving on the back Juliet’s house you can spend some time strolling through Via Mazzini, the main street of the city center, famous for hosting the most elegant shops of Verona. Walking around via Mazzini, it is possible to see some beautiful corners of the old city with some medieval and renaissance buildings such as Saint Tomio church and the Giusti palace. Via Mazzini, which during the Roman age was the decumanus, nowadays connects two of the most important squares: Piazza Bra and Piazza Erbe.

7:00 PM: the ritual of aperitif at Piazza Erbe

In an itinerary of one day in Verona, do not forget to have your aperitif time at Piazza Erbe, the most important and oldest square of Verona. Built as a Roman forum and renovated during the Middle Age, the square hosts some of the most beautiful buildings of Verona as the city hall, the Maffei palace and the Lamberti tower from where it is possible admire a wonderful view. Verona is the capital of spritz – that’s why Piazza Erbe, with its bars overlooking the square, remains the perfect place to do an aperitif as many locals are used to do every day.

9:00 PM: concert at Arena of Verona

Thanks to the wonderful location of the Arena of Verona, which is still used as a venue for lyrical events and for concerts of international pop and rock starts, attending a music show inside this magnificent Roman-age theatre is the best way to end a day in Verona.
