Why Abruzzo is the favorite destinations for nature and outdoor lovers

With over 30% of territory covered by National and Regional Parks and protected nature reserves, a percentage significantly higher than the european average and comparable to the major north-american parks, Abruzzo is the new promised land of experiential tourism based on sustainability, outdoor adventures and authentic stories to feel by heart.

The key element that makes Abruzzo so unique is its pristine and wild nature, an exceptional panorama that is hard to imitate elsewhere, where the snow-capped peaks of Maiella, Gran Sasso and Sirente Velino mountains, guardians of a vast green paradise of forests, rivers, lakes, natural wonders and picturesque villages, harmoniously interact with the fertile hills overlooking the vibrant Adriatic coast.

The absence of mass tourism here is not a limitation at all, rather it is the true secret of its irresistible charm. A trip to Abruzzo is a silent immersion in ecosystems that have kept intact despite the relentless pace of modernity, where the relaxation of a holiday meets the dynamism and sense of adventure of hiking and mountain biking, in a natural setting that promotes mental and physical well-being.

All this is enhanced by the kind and sincere hospitality of the mountain towns and villages, communities faithfully anchored to ancient traditions and the ideal refuge for those seeking space, time and a deep breath away from the beaten track.

Strengths of Abruzzo, an ideal destination for an adventurous mountain itinerary:

Exceptional biodiversity, thanks to the significant presence of protected native fauna (marsican brown bear, apennine wolf, chamois);

Geographical contrasts, with the possibility of going from the high peaks to the coast in just a few hours;

Slow tourism, rich in personalized experiences and historic villages far from mass tourism;

Sustainability, guaranteed by a hospitality model that respects the environment and local traditions;

Dynamism, the core of the outdoor experience in the heart of the region between hiking trails, cycle paths and forest bathing sessions.

Sirente Velino Park: itinerary on five days to fall in love with the Apennines

Sirente Velino Park: Itinerary

View over Rocca di Cambio, Rocche Highlands

If you're already thinking about planning your hiking trip in Abruzzo, you should consider Regional Park Sirente Velino as the perfect destination to combine adventure, discovery and excitement in just one unforgettable vacation.

The Sirente Velino area is ideal for those seeking the adrenaline rush of outdoor activities as well as those interested in the beauty of the landscape and its hidden treasures, including archaeological sites of national importance and picturesque mountain villages totally immersed in a still strongly rural-centered lifestyle based on Abruzzo’s values and roots.

We've arranged for you a five-days travel itinerary to discover Sirente Velino, rich in adventure and memorable experiences.

The town of Celano is our starting point, as well as our base to stay: easily accessible by car from Rome (highways A24 and A25) and well connected to the other towns in the Park (roads SS696 and SS5), here you'll find a wide selection of accommodations and many cultural and historical attractions, such as Piccolomini Castle.

Here is the detailed plan for the five-days itinerary in Sirente Velino Park:

Day 1: destination Alba Fucens and the villages of Monte Velino (Marsicana), round-trip driving distance 50 km, hiking/mountain biking trip time 8-10 km, duration 8 hours

Day 2: destination Altopiano delle Rocche and the highland villages, round-trip driving distance 60 km, hiking/mountain biking trip time 5-10 km, duration 8 hours

Day 3: destination Stiffe Caves and the villages of the Aterno Valley and Subequana Valley, round-trip driving distance 95 km, hiking/mountain biking trip time 3-10 km, duration 8 hours

Day 4: destination Mount Sirente Meadows and Crater (Subequana), round-trip driving distance 55 km, hiking/mountain biking trip time 10-12 km, duration 8 hours

Day 5: destination Subequana and its villages (Sirente Velino Community), round-trip driving distance 75 km, hiking/mountain biking trip time 6-10 km, duration 8 hours

Day 1: Marsicana and Alba Fucens by history, hiking and fauna

Sirente Velino: Marsicana and Alba Fucens

Alba Fucens, roman archaeological site near Massa d'Albe

Itinerary by car: starting from Celano, drive to the SP24 “Alba Fucens” which branches off from the SS696. We are in the Marsicana area within Sirente Velino Park.

The archaeological site of Alba Fucens, also known as the “Pompeii of Abruzzo”, is one of the most fascinating and mysterious places in the Velino Lands. The main attraction here is the majestic roman amphitheater, nestled in a network of ancient roads at the foot of the mountains, but it's also worth stopping to visit the remains of the roman aqueduct and the medieval settlement.

A little further on you can visit the charming village of Massa d'Albe, a natural terrace overlooking the Velino massif.

The exploration continues towards Magliano dei Marsi and in particular the small hamlet of Rosciolo, a mountain gem offering unparalleled hiking experiences (including mountain biking).

From here, we recommend taking Velino’s Path 3, heading to the Church of Santa Maria in Valle Porclaneta, a romanesque masterpiece hidden in the silence of the mountains and surrounded by spectacular views.

More experienced and adventurous hikers can continue along the trails that climb towards the Forche Passage, a challenging route that offers breathtaking views over the plains and the wild nature of Abruzzo.

Day 2: Rocche Highlands, heart of Sirente Velino by cycle paths and white roads

Sirente Velino: Rocche Highlands

Panoramic view over Piani di Pezza by mountain bike, Rocche Highlands

Itinerary by car: starting from Celano, drive to the SS696 towards the Rocche Highlands, passing through the villages of Ovindoli, Rovere and Rocca di Mezzo until reaching the peak near Rocca di Cambio.

The Rocche Highlands is a striking karst landscape hanging over 1.200 meters above sea level, where the discovery of historic villages and the adrenaline-filled adventure of hiking blend harmoniously.

Rocca di Mezzo, in particular, is the beating heart of the entire Sirente Velino Park and the plateau territory, while Rocca di Cambio, dominated by the proud Cross atop the Ocre-Cagno massif and home to a Giant Bench, is among the region's most beautiful mountaineering and skiing destinations.

Rocche Highlands most important strength is its extensive sustainable mobility network, offering travelers the opportunity to explore the mountains of Abruzzo on foot and by mountain bike.

The peaks are easily accessible thanks to the Highlands Cycle Route, a nearly completely flat path long about 15 km (among over 500 km of renovated hiking and cycling trails throughout the Sirente Velino area) suitable for both trekking and cycling tourism, perfect for families and lovers of relaxing hikes among high-altitude meadows and ancient beech forests.

Day 3: Subequana and Stiffe Caves, a wide valley by nature and man

Sirente Velino: Subequana and Stiffe Caves

Stiffe Caves, between San Demetrio ne Vestini and the Subequana Valley

Itinerary by car: starting from Celano, drive to the SS696 to Rocca di Mezzo and continue on the SP38 to Terranera, following the signs for Ocre and San Demetrio ne Vestini until you reach Stiffe (just after Villa Sant’Angelo). We are within Subequana.

Stiffe Caves are among the natural wonders of Abruzzo, an absolute must-see if you're traveling in the Sirente Velino area: the underground river (Aterno basin) resurfaces from the rock below, creating a truly impressive spectacle of water and waterfalls.

The exploration of the caves unfolds along a 700-meter-long equipped trail, where hanging walkways allow you to follow the river's course among stalactites and stalagmites.

Visits to the Stiffe Caves are always led by expert guides and last about an hour; it's essential to wear comfortable and non-slip hiking shoes and a thermal and waterproof jacket, as the internal temperature is constantly around 10°C year-round and humidity is extremely high.

The itinerary continues above ground, exploring the beauty of the Aterno and Subequana Valleys on a journey through the region's most authentic rural culture, especially the villages of Fontecchio (home to a 14th-century fountain and one of Abruzzo's oldest clock towers) and Tione degli Abruzzi.

The most picturesque attractions here are the Pagliare, ancient seasonal stone villages at over 1.000 meters above sea level, once used for transhumance and crop storage, today instead popular hiking destinations and a symbol of resilience and landscape charm.

Day 4: Sirente Lake, seasonal wonder between beech woods and balsamic paths

Sirente Velino: Sirente Lake

Panoramic view of the Sirente Crater or Lake, Secinaro

Itinerary by car: starting from Celano, drive to the SS696 to Rocca di Mezzo and follow the signs for Secinaro. Halfway there, you'll find the Sirente Meadows.

Sirente Meadows form in the Park's landscape a majestic natural amphitheater, dominated by the northern face of the namesake massif.

At the heart of this wide karst valley lies the mysterious Sirente Crater, a circular depression that seasonally - in spring, between April and June - hosts a beautiful and silvery lake formed by melting snow and rainwater.

Spring is also the ideal season to enjoy the natural benefits of the balsamic paths, nature trails at the foot of Mount Sirente to breathe in the pure mountain air and the fragrances of seasonal blooms (daffodils, orchids, and peonies).

Although its precise origin remains a fascinating scientific enigma, the site remains a magnet for hikers.

The area offers a wide variety of hiking trails, suitable for both beginners and experts, ranging from simple strolls through pastures and beech forests to climbs up to the peak of Mount Sirente (2.348 meters), a coveted achievement for those seeking the beauty of a sweeping panorama that extends all the way to the Adriatic Sea.

The Sirente area is also a natural wildlife corridor. Keep your eyes open: you might spot golden eagles flying over the mountain ridges or glimpse chamois and deer, Abruzzo's largest herbivores.

Day 5: Towns of Sirente Velino, the Europe's greenest community

Sirente Velino: Towns Green Community

View of the village of Goriano Sicoli, Subequana Valley

Itinerary by car: starting from Celano, drive to the SS5 that branches off the SS696 to Castel di Ieri. Continuing you can reach Castelvecchio Subequo and Molina Aterno (on the same road) and Gagliano Aterno and Secinaro (signposted provincial roads).

The villages of the Subequana Valley, including Castel di Ieri, Castelvecchio Subequo, Molina Aterno, Goriano Sicoli, Gagliano Aterno and Secinaro, represent a living heritage of rural culture and slow living, the beating heart of the Sirente Velino Green Community, a model of conscious and sustainable tourism recognized as an excellence in Europe.

Spend one day to explore some of these villages on foot. In these places, the promotion of clean energy and soft mobility harmoniously blends with the preservation of centuries-old traditions, offering travelers a genuine welcome that respects the mountain ecosystem.

Castelvecchio Subequo enchants with the monumental Convent of San Francesco, a “little Assisi” to discover here in Abruzzo, while Castel di Ieri boasts an evocative italic temple and a panorama sculpted by ancient medieval towers and arched passages.

This is also a land rich in residences and castles, such as the Castle of Gagliano Aterno, a village that also houses an interesting photography museum (Via Citarella, in the centre).

And speaking of photography, climbing the highlands over Gagliano on the slopes of the Sirente massif, you can reach a wonderful hiking spot offering incredible views of the starry sky, and in particular the monthly evolution of lunar phases, a must-see destination for astrotourism enthusiasts.

Extra stop: Celano Gorges, the canyon of Sirente Velino

Celano Gorges, Sirente Velino

Celano Gorges, one of the Apennine canyons on the road to Aielli

Following the hiking trails that connect Celano to Aielli - a village home to the evocative Torre delle Stelle (Stars Tower), another interesting astronomical observatory in Sirente Velino - the adventure continues at the Celano Gorges.

This mountainous cleft is one of the most spectacular canyons in the Apennines, characterized by vertical limestone walls up to 200 meters high, ideal for adventurous trekking experiences to discover narrow gorges and evocative little waterfalls, such as the Lovers Spring near Ovindoli.

The main trail winds along the dry bed of the seasonal stream that flows through the canyon (especially between autumn and mid-spring, due to heavy rainfall), so it's best to visit between May and August, and in any case when the weather is good.

We recommend wearing comfortable and durable hiking gear and protecting your head with a helmet specifically designed for hiking and climbing, as there's always a risk of falling rocks.

A cultural alternative: magical Aielli and the art of Borgo Universo

Sirente Velino Park is certainly a paradise for hikers, but it would be reductive to consider it exclusively a destination for sports and outdoor activities.

If you're looking to add a fascinating cultural touch to your mountain trip in Abruzzo, after all the hikes around, we recommend a visit to Aielli.

Besides the aforementioned astronomical observatory at its Torre delle Stelle, the highest in Central Italy at over 1.000 meters above sea level, the village is known as a true open-air museum.

This artistic magic is Borgo Universo, the tourism and cultural revitalization initiative launched in 2017 that every summer brings to Aielli important international street artists such as Okuda San Miguel, Ericailcane, and Millo.

The result? Today Aielli boasts more than 40 mural arts based on literary, astronomical and pop-cultural themes that adorn the facades of the buildings in the historic centre, a veritable permanent art gallery of colors, sensations, and geometries.

Sirente Velino Park Itinerary in Abruzzo

Panoramic view over Sirente Meadows in bloom

In which season it’s best to visit the Sirente Velino Park?

The ideal time to visit Sirente Velino Park is between May and August, when the spring and summer blooms explode with scents and colors, the seasonal Sirente Lake fills with silvery waters and the mountain forests become a cool and lush refuge from the sun and heat, perfect for hiking and forest bathing.

Summer is also the best season for high-altitude hiking (including mountain biking) to conquer the highest peaks, while autumn enchants visitors with the magic of the foliage and the lively seasonal festivals in its villages.

In winter the Park becomes an alternative destination for lovers of skiing and snow hiking.

What to include in my luggage to explore Sirente Velino Park?

To explore Sirente Velino comfortably the key is to plan your clothing in layers, taking into account all the stages on your itinerary.

Hiking shoes and ankle protection are essential, as are a pair of waterproof and breathable jackets to face the area's variable weather (year-round) and technical clothing suitable for hiking, particularly cycle touring and mountaineering.

You shouldn’t forget also sunglasses, sunscreen to protect your face and hands and a comfortable but roomy backpack, ideal for carrying a water bottle, food, small towels, a change of clothes, a first aid kit, a cell phone and a power bank, equally essential while exploring the mountains.

What should I do if I come across a wild animal in the Park?

Crossing paths with a chamois, deer or marsican brown bear up close is certainly an intense experience, but it requires profound respect for the environment and the animal, as well as a certain level of composure.

Always keep a safe distance and move calmly, avoiding sudden movements that could disturb the wildlife and trigger aggressive reactions. Observe silently and without interfering, absolutely avoiding offering food or interacting in any way with wild animals.

Never chase a wild animal that spontaneously moves away, you could frighten them and cause them to act violently out of self-defense.

Be extremely careful if you're traveling with your dog, always keep it on a leash and avoid trails and areas commonly crossed by wildlife, the encounter between the two animals may go beyond your control.
