Let's set off on an unforgettable spiritual journey, a true secular pilgrimage through the heart of central Italy. This itinerary, which winds its way through the breathtaking landscapes and locations of Lazio, offers a profound experience that transcends faith and appeals to anyone seeking peace, beauty, and a connection with nature.

The route, which also passes by three critical sites on the Way of St. Benedict, is ideal for exploring by car, allowing us to take in the enchanting views of the hills and medieval villages we encounter along the way.

However, the true spirit of the journey is revealed when we leave the car behind and take a walk. We will follow the same paths trodden by saints and pilgrims, breathing in the scent of the earth and the woods, and listening to the silence broken only by the sounds of nature.

Our journey begins in Rome, the Eternal City. It continues to Subiaco, a jewel nestled in the mountains where St. Benedict spent some time. In this mystical place, we will admire the monasteries of St. Benedict and St. Scholastica, ancient buildings surrounded by nature that invite contemplation and reflection.

Continuing our journey, we will reach Fiuggi, an oasis of wellness where we can regenerate body and mind. The third stop will be Roccasecca, the birthplace of the great philosopher and theologian St Thomas Aquinas.

Our final destination will be Montecassino, the famous abbey founded by St. Benedict, a place of great spiritual significance that has withstood the test of time and history, and from where you can enjoy a splendid view of the entire Liri Valley.

Let's embark on our journey from Rome to Montecassino, a spiritual journey through central Italy that will lead us to discover places of great historical and natural interest, and to rediscover inner peace. This feeling can arise from prayer or simply from contemplating breathtaking views.

Stage 1: Rome

Our spiritual journey through central Italy begins in Rome, the Eternal City —a symbol of Christianity and a crossroads of history and art that speaks to every soul, whether religious or secular.

Rome fascinates with its numerous religious buildings of great historical significance, such as the majestic St. Peter's Basilica and the Basilica of St. John Lateran.

However, among its streets and neighbourhoods, we will encounter places where the spirit rises above religion.

In Rome, even a simple walk can be a moment of inspiration and contemplation of beauty.

Strolling through the historic centre, let us stop at the Pantheon, formerly a temple to all the gods and now a church. Let's immerse ourselves in the unique atmosphere of this structure, which, with its oculus open to the sky, invites reflection on time and infinity.

Or we can head to the Pincio terrace, the Janiculum Hill or the Orange Garden on the Aventine Hill, and enjoy the view over the rooftops and monuments of Rome. In these places, the beauty of nature and the panorama evoke feelings of peace and gratitude.

Finally, the solemnity of ancient sites such as the Roman Forum and the Colosseum is certainly no less spiritual. The remains of a great ancient civilisation are an opportunity to reflect on our roots, our personal history and the legacy we want to leave behind.

The first stop on our spiritual journey in Italy is Rome, a city renowned for its spirituality, offering serene places of silence and introspection for everyone.

Stage 2: Subiaco

We resume our journey, and in just over an hour's drive, we reach Subiaco, our second stop. Nestled in the green Aniene valley, Subiaco is a medieval village of great beauty as well as being one of the most important places in the Benedictine experience.

It was here that St. Benedict lived his first experience as a hermit and founded the first communities of monks.

In Subiaco, we will admire the picturesque medieval town centre and the ancient monasteries of St. Benedict and St. Scholastica, symbolic places of Christianity which, with their architecture and peaceful atmosphere, offer everyone a space for meditation and inner silence.

But it is also the unspoilt nature of the Monti Simbruini Natural Park that will guide us on our spiritual journey.

A short distance from the Monastery of St. Scholastica, we can walk to the Laghetto di San Benedetto (St. Benedict's Lake) and enjoy the peace of this body of water fed by a waterfall.

At this stage of our spiritual journey, we will find universal spirituality in the ancient buildings and the sounds of nature.

Stage 3: Fiuggi

Here we are in Fiuggi, the third stage of our itinerary from Rome to Montecassino.

In just over half an hour, we reach this town famous for its thermal baths and healing waters, an oasis of tranquillity to regenerate body and soul.

The place of relaxation and universal spirituality in Fiuggi is the Parco delle Fonti, a spa complex comprising two establishments, situated within chestnut, oak, and pine forests.

In this spacious area, you can devote yourself entirely to spa treatments, taking time to stroll through the large green areas.

The Parco delle Fonti becomes an open-air temple where the sound of water is constant and spirituality manifests itself in the beauty of nature and in psycho-physical well-being.

The historic centre of Fiuggi, with its ancient churches, narrow streets and small squares, transports us to a peaceful atmosphere of times gone by. Just outside the medieval village, in a panoramic position, we find the Church of Santa Maria del Colle, a place of contemplation offering splendid views.

In this third stage of our spiritual journey through central Italy, we treat ourselves to a moment of quiet and serenity that prepares us for the final destination of our trip.

Stage 4: Roccasecca

We continue our spiritual journey, moving closer to our ultimate destination. In about an hour's drive, we reach our fourth stage, Roccasecca.

This village, far from mass tourism, is the penultimate stage of the Way of St. Benedict and the birthplace of one of the most influential theologians and philosophers in Western history: Thomas Aquinas.

Located on the slopes of Mount Asprano, Roccasecca is surrounded by unspoilt and rejuvenating nature. Here we will explore the places linked to St Thomas, but not only that.

In the silence and tranquillity of nature, we will admire sacred places set in the rock and in the beautiful Liri Valley, such as the Hermitage of the Holy Spirit and the rock church of Sant'Angelo in Asprano.

From the village, we can follow the Via della Filosofia Tomistica (Way of Thomistic Philosophy), a route with 26 information panels dedicated to St. Thomas and his philosophy.

This path, surrounded by ancient walls and breathtaking views, leads to the ruins of the Castle of the Counts of Aquino on Mount Asprano, combining the profound human reflection of St. Thomas with the beauty of nature.

Another sacred place not to be missed for those who find spirituality in the energy and beauty of wild nature is the Melfa Gorges, accessible via a path that runs along the course of the Melfa River, offering stunning views of the river and the surrounding rocks.

In Roccasecca, history, religion and nature invite us to reflect on the profound connection between man and the infinite.

Stage 5: Montecassino

From Roccasecca, we head to the last stop on our spiritual journey in central Italy-Monteccasino, with its famous Abbey.

We will be in Montecassino in just over 30 minutes by car. Still, those who wish to complete the journey in beauty can reach the final destination on foot.

Montecassino, with its splendid Abbey, is a Benedictine place par excellence. St. Benedict founded this majestic monastery in 529 and wrote his Rule here, which was later adopted by all monasteries.

The Abbey stands 516 meters above sea level. It is a beacon of hope and resilience that has withstood no less than four destructions.

A visit to the Basilica and a walk through the beautiful cloisters of this ancient monastery will be a source of great inspiration and spiritual enrichment for both believers and laypeople.

Additionally, its panoramic location will provide us with incredible views of the entire Liri Valley.

All around, the natural park "Monumento Naturale di Montecassino" offers paths through woods and mountains, perfect for those seeking spirituality in the beauty and tranquillity of nature, beyond any dogma.

Our spiritual journey culminates in this place, where the importance of history and the beauty of the landscape instil a profound life force that regenerates the soul.
