Serre Natural Park in spring, Bosco Archiforo

There’s a special spot in the Parco delle Serre where you can truly breathe in the authentic air of spring. It’s the Bosco Archiforo, a forest recognized by the Japanese immunologist Qing Li as one of around forty in the world certified for Forest Bathing, the Japanese practice known as shinrin-yoku.

Forest Bathing immerses you in the natural setting of the forest to stimulate your senses, reduce stress, and promote physical and mental wellness. This practice produces a variety of positive effects for both body and mind, including improved sleep quality, lowered blood pressure, strengthened immune system, and enhanced focus and emotional balance.

In spring, among the majestic white firs of Bosco Archiforo, the experience becomes even more intense: in the silence of nature, with light filtering delicately through the branches, you can feel a deep sense of calm, simply walking among the trees, with the sounds and scents of the forest as your guides and faithful companions.

Points of interest in the Serre Natural Park: monasteries, villages, and castles

Serre Natural Park in spring, Cattolica of Stilo

In the Serre Natural Park, history, nature and culture alternate across different areas, each with its own wonders to discover.

In the historic monastic center of Serra San Bruno, you can admire the Certosa di Santo Stefano del Bosco, founded in the 11th century. As the spiritual and historical heart of the area, it remains closely tied to the region’s centuries-old traditions, making it the perfect place to explore local craftsmanship or follow the paths once walked by the monks.

In the Stilaro Valley, another area of the Serre Park, don’t miss the villages that preserve traces of the area’s past. One of them is Stilo, home to the Cattolica, considered one of the most important examples of Byzantine architecture in Calabria, and the Monastery of San Giovanni Theristis, with its frescoes and sacred furnishings.

Another village worth visiting is Badolato, perched on a hill overlooking the Ionian Sea. Here you can wander through charming alleys in search of hidden squares, historic buildings, fountains, and panoramic views of the coast.

Serre Natural Park, hike in spring

If villages and monasteries tell you the story of the park, it is nature that offers the most immersive experiences, especially in spring, when the Serre Regional Park invites you to enjoy adventures in an even more active and evocative way.

You can devote time to hikes and treks along routes that wind through beech and fir forests, or in the area around Lake Lacina, where the richness of the vegetation and the panoramic viewpoints reveal the most authentic and captivating side of the mountain landscape.

If you love cycling, you’re on the Parks Cycle Route! Explore the Serre sustainably along a trail that, with dedicated itineraries, passes through villages connecting the two seas — the Aranci Coast on the Ionian side and the Coast of the Gods on the Tyrrhenian — offering a truly varied and scenic itinerary.

The route also passes through the Lake Angitola Oasis, a key site for its faunal importance and an ideal location for birdwatching, especially during the spring migrations.
