3. Immerse yourself in the Florentine Historical Football experience.

Florentine Historical Football is one of the city's oldest and most heartfelt traditions. It is a combination of soccer, rugby and wrestling, played in historical costume. The matches take place in Piazza Santa Croce, transformed for the occasion into a sandy arena. Four teams representing the city's four historic districts compete in a tournament: the Whites of Santo Spirito, the Blues of Santa Croce, the Reds of Santa Maria Novella, and the Greens of San Giovanni.
The semifinals are usually held in mid-June, while the finals are held on June 24, the day of St. John the Baptist, Florence's patron saint. The event attracts locals and tourists alike, offering a unique spectacle. It is recommended to purchase tickets in advance, given the large turnout.
This year we will have the first semifinal between the Blue and White on June 10 at 7 p.m., with the procession at 5 p.m. from Piazza Santa Maria Novella. The second semifinal between the Reds and the Greens on June 11 at 6 p.m., with procession at 4 p.m. from Piazza Santa Maria Novella.

From June 17-20, 2025, the Fortezza da Basso will host Pitti Immagine Uomo, one of the world's most important men's fashion fairs. 1. June 24: celebrate the heart of Florentine tradition

On June 24, Florence celebrates its patron saint, St. John the Baptist, with a series of events culminating in a breathtaking fireworks display. The day begins with religious ceremonies and historical parades, followed by the final of the Florentine Historical Football in Piazza Santa Croce. In the evening, the so-called “fochi di San Giovanni” light up the sky above the Arno River, visible from various points in the city, including the Lungarno and Piazzale Michelangelo, starting at 10 p.m. To see them you can find places in the historic center, particularly along the banks of the Arno River, but we recommend arriving early.
