Each winter, the walled medieval town of Viterbo, 90 minutes from Rome, stages a magical Christmas village that rivals even the most famous ones in northern Europe. The festive takeover features stalls, living nativities, costumed performers, and themed attractions in palazzi that are normally quiet in winter.
It feels more like a historic town opening its doors than a commercial fair, which is precisely why travellers looking for an authentic Italian Christmas should have it on their list. Take a weekend off between 15 November 2025 and 6 January 2026 and live the magic.
Viterbo Christmas Markets: a Winter Wonderland Just Outside Rome
Viterbo is one of the most picturesque medieval towns in Europe, its stone lanes and 13th-century palaces still enclosed by walls.
In winter, that setting becomes the backdrop for a deliberately immersive Christmas event: streets are lit, squares are dressed, and different corners of the old town host attractions for families.
The whole historic centre is turned into a fairy tale winter backdrop, so you can explore at your own pace and dip in and out of ticketed areas.
If you are doing a Rome city break in December, this is one of the most interesting festive detours within day-trip distance.
More info on Christmas in ViterboViterbo: A Medieval Christmas Village in Italy
Viterbo Christmas markets spill into the medieval quarter of San Pellegrino, a warren of cobbled lanes and stone archways often cited as the biggest and best-preserved old town in Europe.
For a few weeks, streets, piazzas, palaces, and towers become an open-air stage for one of the most theatrical takes on the holiday season. Visitors enter a true medieval Christmas village in Italy.
Palazzo degli Alessandri holds much of the magic. Inside, Santa’s House feels straight out of a movie: warm lights, mistletoe, red velvet, and a steady stream of children waiting to mail their letters all the way to the North Pole.
Step outside and the celebration continues. Rudolph waits beneath the Wishing Tree, ready to pull Santa’s sleigh, while La Befana (Italy’s Christmas witch) hands out sweets (and a few pieces of coal to the naughty ones) along Via San Gemini. Just beware: the Grinch has taken over the Scacciaricci Tower and may try to steal Christmas...

What’s New at the Viterbo Christmas Village 2025–26
The Viterbo Christmas Village returns this winter, bigger and brighter than ever, with new attractions. The highlight is the Slitta Express VR, a full-motion sleigh ride that uses virtual reality, sound, and special effects to create a light-hearted Christmas adventure. Strap on a headset and you’ll “fly” over a snowy landscape alongside Santa and his reindeer.
Inside Palazzo degli Alessandri, the historic heart of the event, the Ice World comes to life for the second year running: a frosty polar scene filled with animated wonders designed especially for younger visitors.
At the entrance of that 15th-century palace in Piazza San Pellegrino, a cheerful newcomer debuts for 2025: the Elves’ Magic Carriage, a joyful installation glowing with colour.
No Italian Christmas would be complete without a representation of the Nativity Scene. This year’s Presepe, set inside the former Zaffera spaces in Piazza San Carluccio, features live actors and new sets inspired by Viterbo’s medieval streets. Visitors can walk through the scenes as they unfold around them in a story brought to life in stone, light, and sound.
Crafts, Flavours, and Traditions at the Viterbo Christmas Markets
Beyond the lights and music, Viterbo hosts the perfect Italian Christmas markets, returning on Via Marconi from 6 December to 6 January.
Wooden chalets showcase handmade gifts from artisans across the Viterbo area, handcrafted ornaments, nativity figurines, candles, and seasonal decorations.
As with any Italian celebration, food takes centre stage. This is your chance to taste some local favourites: tozzetti (Tuscia’s almond biscuits), panpepato, honey sweets, roasted chestnuts, and steaming cups of hot chocolate or mulled wine. If you need to work off the indulgence, the large ice rink in nearby Largo Benedetto Croce is open throughout the season.
Beyond the Christmas markets - The 2025–26 edition of the Viterbo Christmas Village will feature flag-throwing performances, live music, street shows, children’s entertainment, cosplay parades, and other pop-up events that fill the medieval centre with a festive buzz.
Are Viterbo’s Christmas Markets Better Than the German Ones?
Viterbo plays to its strengths: a medieval urban setup, interactive installations, entertainment for children, and Italian festive culture.
If you’ve already ticked off Innsbruck and Salzburg, make this the year you discover Christmas in Viterbo. It’s also quieter, especially on late-November weekends, yet just as charming, accessible, and full of attractions to enjoy all year round, even in winter.
You can easily fold it into a Central Italy itinerary or a Rome city break without extra flights: train or coach from Rome, markets by day, back to the city at night. Or, stay in Viterbo and add the thermal baths the following day.
That combination of access, price, and atmosphere is what makes it one of the best Christmas towns in Italy.

The Christmas You Don’t Expect in Italy is in Viterbo
When people think of Christmas in Italy, they often picture Alpine landscapes, Trentino’s markets, or big-city shopping. Viterbo shows a different side: a central Italian town combining its own architecture and traditions with interactive attractions to build a Christmas experience that’s family-friendly, fun, photogenic, and still local.
If you’re flying into Rome and want a festive spot but not overrun, Christmas in Viterbo is a smart, under-the-radar pick.
Consider it the Christmas market Americans don’t quite know about yet, but probably will, once word gets out.
