The village is characterised by the presence of long city walls and a typical medieval architecture, made up of ancient buildings and narrow cobbled streets. Cortona has become famous worldwide since it was the setting for the adventures of the American author Frances Mayes in her autobiographical novel, and later film, "Under the Tuscan Sun". Cortona is the perfect rural destination for a dream holiday, immersed in the beauty of the Tuscan countryside.

Cortona, the ancient Etruscan village

On a hill in the Val di Chiana, in the province of Arezzo, stands the Etruscan village of Cortona. Around the 7th century B.C. Cortona became a very powerful city thanks to its strategic position, which allowed a great control of the surrounding territories and the walls that surround it for three kilometres date back to this period, as well as the Etruscan noble tombs scattered around the city. The village as it appears today dates back to the Middle Ages and is characterised by narrow streets intertwined in a continuous up and down pattern, flanked by majestic medieval buildings. Being situated at almost 500 metres above sea level, from the narrow streets of Cortona you can have breathtaking views and it is even possible to see Lake Trasimeno.

The historic centre of the town revolves around the central square, Piazza della Repubblica, the hub of social life, overlooked by two of Cortona's most important buildings: Palazzo Comunale and Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo, both dating back to 1300. Further south we find Piazza Garibaldi, from which you can enjoy a unique view over the Val di Chiana. Cortona is a city rich in history and museums, including the Museo Diocesano, which houses treasures from the churches in the area belonging to the diocese, and the Museo dell'Accademia Etrusca, which houses extraordinary artefacts from the Etruscan and Roman civilisations that inhabited the city. Also not to be missed are the Franciscan Hermitage "Le Celle", the Fortress of Girifalco and the Basilica of Santa Margherita.

Internationally famous thanks to the book and then film, "Under the Tuscan Sun", Cortona is a dream destination, where you can immerse yourself in the Tuscan nature, among bucolic landscapes, excellent food and wine, discovering its varied and fascinating ancient history.
