One of the most essential attractions in Casciana Terme Lari is undoubtedly the historic thermal spa, with its precious waters perfect for regenerating body and spirit.

However, the charm of this place does not end with the thermal baths. Strolling around Casciana Terme, one encounters historic buildings such as the Verdi theatre and fine churches.

The mediaeval district of Pietraia fascinates with the Corte Aquisana, which represents the ancient core of Casciana Terme. A visit to Pietraia is stunning at sunset with the illuminated Aquisana Tower. A few steps from the Corte, the Vicolo dell'Amore is a favourite spot for lovers!

The medieval village of Lari envelops us in an atmosphere of times gone by. The majestic Castello dei Vicari dominates the landscape, its ancient walls recounting centuries of history.

The region also hosts various events and festivals that showcase local traditions and the rich food and wine culture, allowing visitors to experience the authentic spirit of Tuscany.

Let's explore the attractions of Casciana Terme Lari, a delightful destination where history, wellness, and nature beautifully intertwine.

The Castle of the Vicars of Lari

Castle of the Vicars - Casciana Terme Lari

The Castello dei Vicari di Lari is a remarkable structure that rises prominently in the centre of the village, characterised by its unique circular shape and sturdy double walls.

Its roots can be traced back to the early Middle Ages, but what we see now dates from the first half of the 17th century. Following the conquest of Lari by the Florentines in the 15th century, the Castle was designated as the seat of a Vicariate, significantly boosting its historical importance.

Visitors can access the Rocca by taking approximately 100 steps to a charming courtyard with the Palazzo Pretorio. The palace's façade is adorned with multiple coats of arms representing the Vicars who governed here for over four centuries. Among these, the central coat of arms stands out: a finely carved garland of flowers and fruit by Girolamo della Robbia, the youngest son of the renowned Florentine sculptor Andrea della Robbia.

An ancient cistern, originally used for collecting rainwater, is located in the courtyard's centre. The Rocca maintains many characteristics typical of a fortress, historically serving as the Vicar's residence, a court, and even a prison.

Inside, an engaging, interactive educational museum employs multimedia technology to explore the Castle's history and share fascinating anecdotes.

This blend of unique architecture, artistic heritage, and the immersive museum experience contributes to the Castello dei Vicari's status as a distinctive cultural attraction in Tuscany.

Additionally, from the west side, where the Castle's vegetable garden used to be, visitors can enjoy breathtaking views stretching from Pisa to Volterra.

Today, the Castello dei Vicari hosts various events, exhibitions, and weddings, making it an essential destination for anyone exploring Casciana Terme Lari.

A walk through the village of Lari

Lari: medieval hamlet in Tuscany

The attraction that strikes one at first sight of the village of Lari is undoubtedly the Castle of the Vicars. Still, walking through the village's alleyways is worth relaxing in, as it allows you to discover hidden glimpses and enjoy this medieval hamlet's views and evocative atmosphere.

It is a delightful walk and suitable for everyone. It starts from Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, where you can admire the small village overlooked by the large Castello dei Vicari.

Taking what was once the access bridge to the village, you arrive at the second city wall and walk along a beautiful tree-lined avenue to reach the small church of the Madonna della Neve.

Along the way, you will come across other interesting monuments, such as the Town Hall and the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, which dates back to the 10th century.

Returning towards the centre of the village, walking between one alley and another, you will also come across the ancient entrance gates to the town and the Castle: Porta Maremmana and Porta Fiorentina.

The small village of Lari, part of the municipality of Casciana Terme Lari, has been awarded the Orange Flag by the Italian Touring Club.

The Orange Flag is a vital recognition awarded to small Italian villages that stand out for enhancing their historical and cultural heritage and their attention to sustainability.

The Casciana Spa: wellness and nature in Tuscany

Spa in Casciana - wellness in Tuscany

In the heart of Tuscany, the thermal baths of Casciana are an unmissable place for wellness, health, and relaxation. Thermal baths existed in Roman times. Their development is due to Countess Matilda of Canossa, a wealthy feudal lady who lived between 1046 and 1115.

Legend has it that the Countess had a pet blackbird she was fond of. During a stay at a fortress in the Casciana Terme area, the blackbird fell ill and miraculously recovered only after bathing in a pond of warm water.

The Countess also bathed in the same hot water and derived enormous benefits for her health. Thus, she had pools built to use those beneficial hot waters, giving birth to what was to become the Terme di Casciana.

The benefits of water Mathelda

For years, the Casciana Terme Thermal Centre has been a reference point for many guests who want to benefit from the curative properties of Mathelda water and who seek a wellness experience for body and mind, in contact with nature.

The Casciana thermal baths comprise two pools, one open-air, immersed in the greenery of the relaxing thermal park, and the other indoor, dedicated mainly to motor rehabilitation. Besides being therapeutic, the thermal water of Casciana Terme also exerts an intense relaxing action.

Even a few hours at the Casciana thermal baths contribute to regaining one's psychophysical balance. Moreover, the thermal baths can be combined with relaxing walks in nature, tasting typical products, and cultural visits to the famous Tuscan cities of art.

A walk among the churches of Casciana Terme Lari

Exploring the nature and small villages of the Casciana Terme Lari territory, many churches witness the historical period from the Etruscans to the Roman Empire.

Lovers of art and nature can take a beautiful route on foot or by bicycle to discover the churches in the Casciana Terme Lari area.

We recommend starting the excursion from the oldest church, the 8th-century Church of San Martin del Colle. This privately owned church can be visited with a prior reservation.

Continuing towards Parlascio, you will come across the 11th-century Church of San Quirico e Giulietta, with precious frescoes inside, including a fresco of the "Madonna del Latte."

The Oratory of the Madonna della Cava dates back to the 17th century. Inside are seven paintings by the Florentine painter Bamberini and a precious fresco above the main altar.

The Church of San Niccolò has a single nave and five altars and dates back to the 18th century.

Along the way, you will encounter other valuable historical buildings, such as the Aquisana Tower and the Etruscan Archaeological Excavation of Parlascio, where a votive well with a diameter of 2 metres and what is thought to be an ancient Etruscan village dating back to 700 BC was found.

Nestled in the green hills of Pisa, the Sanctuary of the Madonna dei Monti is a place of peace where spirituality and nature meet.

This Sanctuary stands on a hill, a few steps from the village of Sant'Ermo. Of ancient origin, it has been renovated several times. It depicts the "Madonna Addolorata" and many ex-votos on the walls.

This place, so dear to the peoples of the Pisan and Livorno hills, is surrounded by nature. From the mountain, one can admire a stupendous panorama over the Gulf of Poets, which leads to the summit of Monte Capanne on the Island of Elba.
