From July 16 to September 10, 2026, every Thursday evening the Cascate di Stanghe will take on a completely new appearance.

Starting at 9:00 PM, the famous white marble gorge in the heart of Racines will light up thanks to the Gilfenklamm Magic Light, an immersive nighttime experience that allows visitors to explore the route independently among spectacular light displays, suspended walkways, and the roar of water echoing through the mountains. A special additional evening is also scheduled for Saturday, August 15, 2026.

As darkness falls, the gorge transforms into an almost surreal landscape: the white marble walls reflect theatrical illuminations, the torrent accompanies every step through the darkness, and the entire experience feels closer to a fantasy film than to a traditional alpine hike.

At a time when many European alpine destinations are struggling with summer overtourism, the desire for immersive vacations far from the crowds is growing rapidly, and this is exactly where Racines still manages to surprise.

Surrounded by alpine valleys, forests, and high-altitude trails, this corner of South Tyrol is home to one of the most enchanting nighttime experiences of the Italian summer, and one of the most fascinating hidden gems in the Alps.

Racines, the alpine destination that still feels secret

In northern South Tyrol, Racines stands out for its quiet and unhurried rhythm, something increasingly difficult to find in well-known mountain resorts.

The area stretches across three alpine valleys (Val Racines, Val Ridanna, and Val Giovo) creating a landscape still deeply connected to nature and local traditions. You never feel as though you are in a mountain destination built around mass tourism. Instead, Racines maintains a rare balance between scenery, traditions, and authentic alpine life.

Every season transforms the landscape while preserving its ability to make you slow down and truly breathe

In spring, meadows and alpine huts fill with light; in summer, crystal-clear mountain lakes and rushing streams provide relief even on the hottest days; autumn turns the valleys into a succession of flavors, foliage, and cozy refuges. Even winter retains an intimate atmosphere, far removed from the frenzy of more famous alpine destinations.

During the warmer months, the activities to experience in Racines feel almost endless. Hiking lovers can explore trails of every difficulty through forests, pastures, and high peaks, while three 360-degree panoramic platforms offer spectacular views across the valleys.

More than 25 alpine huts and mountain refuges are scattered across the area, perfect for relaxing breaks filled with local cuisine and authentic South Tyrolean hospitality.

But what truly makes Racines special is the way it makes you feel: the cool air even in the height of summer, the silence of the forests, the sound of water accompanying many hikes, and that constant sense of space and tranquility that has become increasingly rare to find in the European Alps today.

At night, the Cascate di Stanghe feel like a fantasy film

By day, the Cascate di Stanghe are already among South Tyrol’s most enchanting natural landscapes. But it is after sunset that they completely transform. From mid-July to mid-September, every Thursday night, the gorge becomes an immersive experience that feels closer to a fantasy movie than a traditional alpine hike.

The Gilfenklamm Magic Light engages every sense. From your very first steps into the gorge, your perception of space changes: the air becomes cooler, the sound of water grows louder, and the towering white marble walls reflect mesmerizing plays of light.

The Cascate di Stanghe are one of the few gorges in the world formed entirely from pure white marble, and this is precisely what makes the nighttime experience so spectacular. The pale rocks glow in the dim light with silver reflections and shifting colors, while the turquoise water and deep green vegetation emerge from the darkness in flashes.

As you walk along the route, you cross bridges, suspended walkways, and staircases carved into the rock while the torrent rushes just below. In some sections, the gorge suddenly narrows, leaving room only for the roar of water and thin beams of light illuminating the stone and mist suspended in the air.

You are not simply looking at an illuminated waterfall in Italy, you are experiencing it from within, surrounded by water, rock, and the darkness of the Alps.

One of the most breathtaking moments comes when you reach the so-called “Church,” a narrow and towering section of the gorge where water crashes between marble walls in a waterfall nearly fifteen meters high. Here, light reflects across the white rock surfaces, the sound of the torrent reverberates through the natural fissure, and a short tunnel carved into the mountain amplifies the rare sensation of being inside a hidden and surreal world.

Gilfenklamm Magic Light is the experience you wouldn’t expect to find in Italy

In recent years, the way people experience the mountains has changed dramatically, and night tourism is emerging as one of the most fascinating trends in contemporary travel. Walking through nature after sunset completely transforms your perception of space, sound, and even time itself.

The Gilfenklamm Magic Light stands apart from classic summer outdoor activities. This is not the usual daytime hike between trails and mountain huts, but a deeply immersive and cinematic experience

The theatrical lights, the constant roar of water, the marble walls glowing in the dark, and the starry sky above the gorge create an atmosphere that feels closer to Icelandic or Nordic landscapes than the traditional imagery of the Italian Alps.

The landscape becomes something you experience on a deeper sensory level. The sound of the torrent intensifies in the evening silence, the cool humidity of the gorge settles on your skin, and the lights continuously reshape the rock surfaces, making every section feel different from the last.

At the same time, the route maintains an accessible sense of adventure. Crossing suspended walkways, staircases carved into stone, and narrow illuminated passages creates the perfect balance between soft adrenaline and natural wonder that makes a journey unforgettable.

Even the limited timeframe contributes to the uniqueness of the experience. The Gilfenklamm Magic Light takes place only from mid-July to mid-September and exclusively on Thursday evenings, a detail that heightens the feeling of exclusivity and discovery.

In a time when most travel experiences feel endlessly available and repeatable, knowing that something happens only on a few summer nights changes the way you experience it completely.

The magic of the Stanghe Falls captivates all ages

For children, walking through the Cascate di Stanghe at night feels like stepping into a fairytale world. Suspended walkways, the sound of rushing water in the darkness, lights illuminating the rock walls, and the sensation of exploring a hidden gorge transform the hike into a small adventure where they become part of the story.

Furthermore, the experience maintains a slow and accessible rhythm that also makes it ideal for parents, grandparents, and travelers who want to enjoy the mountains without tackling demanding treks.

The well-equipped route allows you to explore the gorge safely, leaving space for wonder and shared moments. It is the kind of experience that naturally creates a connection between generations because everyone ends up looking at the landscape with the same sense of awe.

At a time when many families are searching for alternatives to classic city breaks or overcrowded summer destinations, Racines offers a completely different way to experience a vacation. Days unfold between mountain trails, alpine huts, streams, and quiet moments in nature, while evenings become sensory experiences that linger far longer than activities designed purely for entertainment.

The perfect summer to discover Racines before everyone else does

In a Europe where many destinations are struggling under the weight of mass tourism, there are still places capable of giving you that rare feeling of discovery. Racines is made of silent mountains, uncrowded trails, alpine huts surrounded by greenery, and a relationship with nature that still feels spontaneous rather than designed for fast tourism.

It does not try to impress with artificial attractions created to go viral. Instead, it captivates slowly through details that are becoming increasingly rare to find: cool air even in the height of summer, the melody of alpine streams, the silence of the forests, and that constant sensation of space that today feels almost luxurious.

Then night arrives. Lights begin to glow inside the gorge, the roar of water accompanies every step, and the Gilfenklamm Magic Light transforms the Cascate di Stanghe into something unlike any mountain experience you have ever had before.

As more travelers search for new ways to experience summer vacations, Racines stands out as one of the most fascinating and still surprisingly undiscovered alternatives in the Italian Alps, a place to discover now, before it becomes one of the next alpine destinations everyone is talking about.

And when you finally leave the illuminated gorge behind, while the sound of water slowly fades into the silence of the mountains, you will probably feel as though you have experienced one of those rare moments of wonder that make a journey truly unforgettable.
