In 2026 Venice's historic centre will still have a paid entrance fee for sixty days from April to July (weekends, holidays and long weekends), maintaining the pay-to-visit policy introduced two years ago which requires online purchasing of a 5€ ticket with reservation.
The ticket, called an entry fee, is part of an initiative by the City of Venice designed to curb overtourism in peak tourist months, mitigating its negative effects for residents and travelers.
In an international tourism capital like Venice, overtourism is a phenomenon that affects both the quality of life of residents and the travel experience of tourists, who are forced to sacrifice precious hours while stuck in endless lines or trapped in increasingly crowded alleys and squares.
The spires of San Marco soaring toward the sky, the pink marble of the Doge's Palace merging with the colors of the sunset, the canals crisscrossed by gondolas, the vibrant and romantic atmosphere of the Lagoon. Such beauty doesn't deserve rushed tourism, which is why the entry fee represents a valuable tool this year, as well, for promoting sustainable and mindful tourism experiences.
Who must purchase an entrance ticket to Venice?
Paid admission to Venice does not impose a maximum threshold of tourists, but rather it aims at putting a limit on the arrival of only one-day visitors, thus promoting more respectful, immersive and sustainable forms of tourism.
Visitors over the age of 14 who are not staying overnight in the city and who wish to visit Venice's historic centre between 8:30 am and 4:00 pm must purchase a ticket. During the evening and night hours, no entrance fee is required.
Residents and natives of Venice, workers and students working in the Municipality area (by registering online and requesting a certified exemption), minors under 14, disabled people with a companion, those visiting relatives residing in the city and those staying in local accommodations are exempt from paying the fee - in the latter case, request a QR code that proves a regular overnight stay in the city.
Passing through the Maritime Station, Piazzale Roma and Tronchetto without entering the historic centre is free.
The smaller islands of the lagoon, that are Murano, Burano, Torcello, and Venezia Lido, are also exempt from the fee, thus allowing free access.
Venice entry fee: how much and how to pay?
Entry fee to Venice requires the purchase of a ticket at a cost of €5 per person per day. The fee is the same for everyone, with no reductions. Each ticket is personal and valid for the entire day, so if you leave the historic centre and then return during the same day, you don't need a new ticket.
Please note: it is recommended to book your Venice entrance ticket well in advance, at least 72 hours before; all last-minute bookings (less than three days in advance) and admissions without a reservation will incur a €10 surcharge, subject to the same rules outlined above.
To purchase your ticket, simply visit the official website of the City of Venice and follow the booking procedure. Once payment is done, you will be issued a voucher with a QR code, which you must carry with you and show at the entrance controls.
Not paying the access fee or refusing to show the QR code at the controls will result in fines ranging from €25 to €150. The fine will be paid in the mode and within the timeframes according to the instructions provided on the receipt.
